Four are headed home tonight after last night's SYTYCD performance

Although this week was supposed to be the Top 18 dancers performing on So You Think You Can Dance, twenty dancers took to the stage based on last week’s results.

Joining Nigel and Mary on the panel was the ever glamorous (and ever-hilarious) Debbie Reynolds who I’d like to refer to as Princess Leia’s (Carrie Fisher) mom. We were all reminded of Ms. Reynolds tap-dancing and acting abilities when a clip from Singin’ in the Rain was played, but tonight’s show demonstrated her amazing sense of humour (“It’s fantastic to be here, it’s fantastic to be alive!).

And to get to know the dancers better, each dancer had to share a secret about their partner. The memorable ones were Ryan’s leg hair growing extremely fast, Wadi using women’s hair removal cream on his chest, Sasha sweats like a dude and that Jordan thought there was a SYTYCD Airline.

Choreographers invited this week were Mandy Moore, Stacey Tookey, Nakul Dev Mahajan, Napolean and Tabitha, Spencer Liff, and Jean-Marc Genereaux. We usually see this Ballroom expert behind the judges’ table for So You Think You Can Dance Canada, so it was nice to see Jean-Marc choreographing a Viennese Waltz for Jordan and Tadd as well as a Cha Cha for Missy and Wadi. Though the judges were fans of the waltz, Nigel wasn’t too impressed with Wadi’s Cha Cha performance. Looks like they’re in danger of heading to the bottom three tonight.

Mandy Moore challenged couples, Ryan and Ricky, and Melanie and Marko with a jazz routine. Ryan and Ricky’s routine was very rock and roll, while the latter couple donned bowler hats and added some swing to their jazz.

For the contemporary pieces, Calgary-native Stacey Tookey was busy with Caitlynn and Mitchell and Clarice and Jess. The first couple’s routine was stunning with beautiful leg extensions, passion and power. Some moves were so powerful, Caitlynn actually got a cut on her face while dancing. Clarice and Jess’s dance proved they had the technical ability, but as the judges noted, they needed to improve on their sections as a couple.

While there were entertaining routines like Bollywood by Iveta and Nick as well as a Broadway performance involving Ashley, Chris and bars, I was excited for the hip hop routines. One of the reasons I look forward to the American SYTYCD is to see what NappyTabs (Napolean and Tabitha) have cooking up in their dance kitchen. I fell in love with their dance style in Season 4, especially when Katee and Joshua performed their dances.

This season it was Miranda and Robert, and Sasha and Alexander who had the chance to dance for the lyrical hip hop choreographers. Miranda and Robert had to take on the role of birds, woodpeckers to be exact. I wasn’t really sure about the whole concept, but nonetheless the couple hit it out of the ball park with isolations, swagger and embraced the signature NappyTabs style. If this routine was about hitting the beats hard, their next piece with Shasha and Alexander focused on the emotional aspect. The performance, about a soldier coming home to his loved one, was so good it brought Mary and Debbie to tears.

Tonight, the three couples with the lowest votes are dancing for their life and unfortunately, the judges can only save one guy and one girl. The show will feature the 20 dancers in a David Scott routine and have LMFAO performing their hit.
