The first episode of Season 4 of So You Think You Can Dance Canada was all about the Toronto auditions. One great dancer after the other auditioned and was put through to the final with the judges being pretty free with their decisions.
There were some dancers I felt in the past would have been made to go to choreography first, but today were sent to the finals. Hard to say this far in advance, but once we get to the finals I think we’ll see large groups of people heading home early on.
I believe this is the first time the US and Canada shows have been on at the same time and wonder if this will help or hurt the Canadian season. I figure it could help as everyone will tune in to both each week and this will keep it top of mind. Or will we be all danced out and only make time to watch one of the two?
In my opinion, Canada has produced the stronger dancers, which is an amazing compliment when you look at the U.S. talent. I’m not sure I can say exactly why, but there's something about the Canadian dancers that is just that much better.
Toronto auditions were a mix of new dancers who have reached the age of requirement for trying out and faces from the past. Some were surprises, some were not. I’m always proud of the one genre of dancers who go out and take classes in other styles to be well rounded and help them get through the auditions. That is real dedication.
Some of my favourite auditions were a tap dancer from Ancaster, ON as well as Joey Arrigo and Adam Lopapa who are both from Woodbridge, ON (I think). The traditional Chinese dancer who has been on past auditions came back once again and made it to the finals after the choreography round.
There were some surprises like Kirstie Keenan -who made it to finals last year, but this year was cut after choreography. Other dancers I really took notice of were Jennifer Abbey and Jordan Davis. Some talented creative hip hop dancers impressed the judges so much they were sent through to the finals. I’m hoping at least a few of them will be able to pick up other styles of dance because I want them around for a long time.
Where will these dancers end up in a few weeks time? Who knows but isn’t that the fun of the show? Next week we’ll see auditions from Vancouver, Edmonton and Saint John, NB.
