October 2014 Studio Spotlight: Interplay School of Dance


Located in Toronto at 250 Davisville Avenue, Interplay offers recreational, pre-professional, and enhanced intensive programs for all ages and abilities. In addition to their in studio programs, Interplay also operates dance programs in partnership with Bishop Strachan School as well as outreach programs at Branksome Hall and Mooredale House in order to provide quality after-four classes.


In 2006, studio director Karen Davies Thomas took over Interplay School of Dance from previous director, Anna McCowan. We had the pleasure of chatting with Karen this week about Interplay's classes, students, and upcoming events.

Q: How many years has Interplay been in business? Tell us about a few significant events over the years.
A: Since 1983. I took over the school from Anna McDown Johnson 8 years ago. We have studens who have been accepted in many professional schools and companies around the world. We also have students who are accepted into university for dance, teachers college, The Next Step series, So You Think You Can Dance series and cruise ships. Wea re very proud of their accomplihsments and their exciting careers in the dance world.

Q: What is your favourite part about being the director of Interplay?
A: The students and parents are wonderfl and I love teaching and seeing all my students grow as dancers and more importantly as people.

Q: How many students attend classes at your school weekly? What kind of classes do you offer?
A: We teach over 1000 students in the downtown Toronto region, Toronto East, East Beaches area, Bishop Strachan, Mooredale, and Branksome Hall private schools. We offer enhanced classes for students who which a career in dance from grade 7 to grade 12, instensive program for students who love dancing and are very dedicated to the art, recreational classes for those who just love to move and show their love for dance. We teach mom and tot, creative movement, ballet, pointe, repetoire, contemporary, modern, jazz, lyrical, tap, musical theatre and yoga/pilates. We also have a performing and a competing company.

Q: Tell us a bit about the type of environment you create for your students at Interplay.
A: A family oriented environment with a professional atmosphere. Wonderful staff members who work as a team to create a loving and caring environment through profressional training.

Q: Does Interplay have any upcoming events or exciting news to share?
A: Every year we perform a Nutcraker and Mixed Program throughout the GTA as well as Durham and at the Betty Oliphant Theatre. This year it will be on Sunday, December 21. We also perform in May and June at the BOT annually.
