Since its inception in 1995, Port City Dance Academy
has been offering ballet and modern dance classes for both recreational and pre-professional students. Former students are now dancing around the world! The school is operated as a not-for-profit community arts organization, and its artistic team currently consists of four outstanding teachers: artistic director Andrea Scott; resident choreographer Georgia Rondos, Pippa Wennberg, and Karen Galbraith.
In the spring of 2011, Port City Dance Academy celebrated the retirement of beloved Ballet Jörgen ballerina, Tara Butler. The show included three solos that were beautifully danced by Tara Butler, as well as a remount of WillyNilly, a work created by Tara Butler for the Port City students in the summer of 2006.
Currently, PCDA students are preparing for The Nutcracker & The Girl With The Shell; a unique adaptation of the traditional Nutcracker. Next on the agenda is Winterfest; a contemporary dance festival that will be presented in Port City’s own BLACK BOX studio theatre on December 29.
Andrea Scott has been teaching dance for over 20 years and has been an artistic director for over 15 years, all the while trying very hard to promote dance as an expressive performing art in a largely industrial community working with students, parents, other artists and arts groups, public schools, business people, politics, bureaucrats, and more!
Now, more than ever, she appreciates brilliant choreographers who are both skillful and talented; dance that is stimulating, or expressive or beautiful, or all three; and more than anything she loves to watch the dancing of a dancer who loves the dance.
