September Studio Spotlight: Cadence Dance Studio

A new studio in Toronto, Cadence Dance Studio (CDS) was founded in April with the vision of offering children, adults and professional dancers an education in the art of dance. By offering the opportunity to enter the Royal Academy of Dancing (R.A.D.) examinations, children are able to set goals and actualize them which encourage a healthy-minded dancer.

“In April 2011 my partner Zhenya Cerneacov and I decided to open a studio to fill the demand for further training for these dancers,” said co-artistic director Courtnae Bowman. “It is our vision to provide a professional environment to our students where a career in dance is the goal, providing opportunities to work choreographers, teachers and mentors who are leading in the field of contemporary ballet.”

With a faculty of 13 instructors, CDS offers programs for children ages two to 17, adults, and professionals in ballet, contemporary jazz, pointe creative movement, body conditioning, Pilates, and yoga. Home to Cadence Ballet and its three companies (Cadence Youth Ballet, Cadence Bridges Ballet and Cadence Progressive Contemporary Ballet), CDS offers an alternative to the competitive dance environment by offering children ages nine to 17 a professional company experience through Cadence Youth Ballet. This environment will allow them to acquire the practical skills needed to pursue a career in dance and the discipline which will advance them through life.

Bowman has been teaching and choreographing for over sixteen years. Her students have gone on to train at Canada’s National Ballet School, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, The Goh Ballet Academy, Quinte Ballet School, York University Dance Department and The George Brown Dance Program.

The unique opportunity that Cadence provides is its association with Cadence Ballet which provides an intimate experience for the dancers to work up close with a contemporary ballet company and with the possibility of entering one of three performing companies. Cadence provides an holistic approach to training and performing where it is possible to enter the studio at a young age for training and then enter a performing company which can carry them through their entire career as a dancer. For children wanting to pursue a professional career, there’s the opportunity to join Cadence Ballet’s Youth Professional Training Program. For ages nine to 17, dancers need to audition.

This summer has been especially active for CDS students who have participated in a full month of summer dance intensives. Guests from the professional field have graced our studio sharing valuable knowledge with all of the students. Students have just wrapped their end-of-summer demonstration on September 08, and are preparing for the R.A.D. examinations in the fall.
