What's That Dance?

Retro

Retro isn’t just a thing of the past. It has become very popular in the past few years, from retro clothes, to retro music, to retro glasses (my favourite) to retro cars and even furniture. I recommend taking the opportunity to discover some dance trends of the past. You’ll be surprised how related they are to your current dancing.

Some popular trends include swing and lindy hop of the 30’s and 40’s. This dance craze had a huge comeback a few years ago due to its social style, laid back casual vibe and great live music. There are swing dance societies in virtually every big city in Canada. Look on their websites to locate classes, workshops and outings.

Another fun retro craze is disco. This dance, which originated in night clubs and on the dance floor has become quite codified and can be performed with a partner as a social dance. Disco is one of the featured dance styles on “So You Think You Can Dance Canada”. If you want to go further back in time, look into English Country Dance. There has been a strong resurgence in the popularity of this social dance as well. English Country Dance is fun and easy to do as it uses pedestrian steps. This is a sure fire way to meet new people as you’ll be dancing in couples, small and large groups. Barn Dances are organized in major cities throughout the year. It’s a great opportunity to get your feet wet for the first time and meet new people. Try the following link to get a list of English Country Dance clubs and societies throughout Canada.

Finding a dance style that you enjoy most is part of discovering your likes and dislikes. If you never try, you’ll never know.
